The Working Proof: Jenny Kim – Coffee Deer

New print release! Our last of the year! Jenny Kim created this beautiful print out of charcoal and abstract coffee-colored washes. Now that New York City finally feels like winter, Coffee Deer feels like the perfect print release, with the barren landscape and the quiet dignity of the deer. I love the contrast between the abstracted ground, and the detail of the deer.
Jenny chose to pair her print with Puppies Behind Bars.

I’ve always had a soft spot for dogs, especially service dogs. I see great value in training dogs for the disabled or explosive detection canines for law enforcement, and also in the contribution these dogs make to those people in need of their service, love, and companionship.

The Working Proof: Gemma Correll – Have You Hugged Your Cat Today?

New print release! This one is for all of the animal lovers out there. Gemma Correll is well-known for her sweet and humorous illustrations of life and animals.

I guess the idea behind Have You Hugged Your Cat Today? is fairly self-explanatory. I don’t have a cat myself – I have a pug, which is kind of like a cat except that he’s actually a dog – but I find that a hug from a small animal (cat, dog – not so much a rattlesnake or a plague-carrying rat) cures pretty much any ill.

The Working Proof: Heather Moore – Seeking

New print release! I’ve been a longtime Skinny laMinx fan – what’s not to love about graphic illustrations and bold colors? So, I’m thrilled to bring you this week’s print release by Heather Moore – Seeking, a screenprint that began as an illustration cut from paper. Seeking makes me feel like I’m getting a peak into a jungle somewhere – lush vines and plants, and filled with wildlife that are both hidden and visible, if you know where to look.
Being from South Africa, Heather wanted to choose a charity that has a positive impact on her continent, so 15% of each print sold will be donated to the Jane Goodall Foundation. Read our interview with Heather here, and buy the print here.

The Working Proof: Sasha Prood & 10% Off!

New print release! Chevron Repeat is a beautiful exercise in pattern and technique by Sasha Prood. In Sasha’s words:

Chevron Repeat is a piece from a larger ‘watercolor meets pattern’ study. In this study I was exploring the juxtaposition of order – the geometric shape in repeat and disorder – the imperfect quality of watercolor. What I enjoy most about painting with watercolor is that as much as you work to control it, there is always an unpredictable aspect in how it will dry.

Ha. This is a fun glow in the dark print by Jason Dean/The Best Part – Day and Night features a quaint city scene during the day, and the dark side (zombies! criminals! crime fighters!) of the city by night. This hand-pulled 18″ x 24″ 9-color (including two different layers of phosphorescent inks) screen print is printed on 100 lb. white stock, signed and numbered in an edition of only 60.

The Working Proof: Penelope Dullaghan – Reading Under Tree

New print release! Reading Under Tree by Penelope Dullaghan is perfect for these crisp fall days – changing leaf colors, scarves and gloves, favorite books, hanging out outside while it’s still warm enough to. There’s nothing better than sitting under a tree in the park and letting the sun warm your back while watching the world move around you, or while reading a book. Penelope’s print encapsulates that feeling perfectly.
15% of the sale of this print goes to the Farm Sanctuary. Penelope became a vegetarian five years ago because she wanted to do her own small part to help put an end to factory farms and cruelty to animals. She chose Farm Sanctuary for the awareness they are bringing to this issue.

Heisuke Kitazawa - Dance Party

Dance Party is an awesome print by Heisuke Kitazawa, an illustrator that I have long since admired, ever since spotting his wallet series for Poketo. Dance Party is about how we coexist with others. It expresses how Heisuke feels about communication:

Animals or humans it's all the same. It's all about sincerity - how we treat others and not about knowing the language or other communication methods.

This is a digital print on acid free, Neenah uncoated matte 100lb cover paper that is 80% recycled. It was digitally signed by the artist and was numbered by The Working Proof. 15% of each print sold will benefit Puppies Behind Bars. The Working Proof: Blanca Gomez - Village

I am a longtime Blanca Gómez fan, so I am thrilled to share today's print edition, Village, with you. Village was created by Blanca as a simple and calm portrait of her ideal landscape. As with all of her artwork, the landscape features simple geometric shapes and bright colors.

A-10 Thunderbolt

When I was a kid I was fascinated with fighter planes, especially the A-10 Thunderbolt. We would go to the big air shows every year and watch the demonstrations and check out the cockpits. Every once in a while we would see them flying around the neighborhood from our local AFB. It's so unconventionally designed - pretty much a plane built around a giant gun. No swept wings give it insane lift for huge payloads, the elevated engines are more protected from AAA, and the titanium bathtub makes sure the pilot doesn't have to worry about getting shot in the butt. The Warthog is still active but being phased out by other more advanced systems, but I still love looking at the thing.

Yesterday was the first day of spring, and Unplug is a celebration of the changing season. After a long winter of hanging out indoors and spending a lot of time in front of a computer screen, it's time to unplug and go outside! I love the sentiment (and need the reminder!). The print, by Hollie Chastain, was originally created for a group show centered around a modern take on the Works Progress Administration posters of the 1930s, promoting health and safety, travel and educational programs. The artists involved with the group show were challenged to create a poster with a modern message, Hollie's being that there is always more adventure and beauty in nature than we can ever find online.

The Working Proof & Rare Device: Aesopica

Another project that's been a long time in the making, and one that we are thrilled to announce: Rare Device and The Working Proof are proud to present Aesopica, a group art show centered around Aesop's Fables. Aesopica was inspired by 826 National's work - a network of nine nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping students with expository and creative writing. Organized around a theme of storytelling, we asked twelve amazing artists to participate by illustrating one of Aesop's Fables. Participating artists include Andrea D'Aquino, Samantha Hahn, Caitlin Keegan, Sol Linero, OSoo, Danna Ray, Amy Ruppel, Catherine Ryan, Lisa Solomon, Yasmine Surovec, Julianna Swaney, and Gretchen Wagoner.

The show opens this Friday, November 19th, and if you are in San Francisco, I hope that you will stop by the opening! The show will run through January 9 in the Rare Device project space. Both original artwork and prints will be available, as well as a show catalog printed by Blurb. 15% of the gross proceeds from the show will be donated to 826 Valencia, the San Francisco chapter of 826 National.
