rewashlamp

Tó Martins’ rewashlamp is an exercise in reuse. The base of each lamp is made from a washing machine drum and covered with a recycled lampshade material – fabrics, measuring tape, ping pong balls, stainless steel sponges…The lamp base is made from a tripod, allowing the user to adjust the lamp to the desired height.

stockholm-based designers humans since 1982 have created 'surveillance chandelier'. the light fixture, formed from
powder coated aluminum surveillance cameras, hangs from the ceiling with 5 to 6 cameras illuminating the room.
the lighting object comes in an edition of ten pieces, each hand-made by the designers. the chandelier is based
on an earlier version by the studio entitled surveillance light, which designboom covered previously here.

mauro soddu: yaya

'yaya' lamp by mauro soddu

italian architect mauro soddu has created a lamp linked to the traditional memory of the old matriarch figure
typical to sardinia, italy. the close relationship between the sardinian woman and the weaving process influenced
his choice of wool as the principal material. the aim of the designer is to evoke the role of the grandmother
which is slowly disappearing in a rapidly modernizing society.

the lamp has a very simple and thin iron structure based on five curved elements. welded backbone to the structure
hides the light source which is composed of nine warm leds. the skirt of the 'yaya' lamp is formed from a wool string,
woven from the bottom rod to the upper one, encircling the metal support system at each passage. the covering mantle
is a pure white woolen cloth, hand-stitched to the iron structure in four points.

Sand Shine

The Desert Storm lamp’s use of sand as the main material provides an organic feel in both appearance and touch. The shape of these sand-molded lamp shades brings to mind primitive dessert dome dwellings and the fixture’s overall figure resembles plants that blossom near the Mediterranean seashore. Though they look fragile, the shades’s strength partners with that of the fixture’s metal pole.

Lili Lite – Studio Smeets Design

The Lili Lite by Thijs Smeets is a cool devise – a combination reading lamp, bookshelf, and bookmark. A sensor turns off the light when an open book is placed on the shelf. When the book is picked up again, the light automatically turns on.

Rewarding DIY Lamp

MyLamp combines Scandinavian design simplicity with Japanese folding functionality into a beautifully basic yet eye-catching desk lamp that’s a piece of cake to assemble. Made from recycled cardboard and capable of being cut in near waste-less batches, MyLamp is a great solution for efficient production and transportation that also includes the user as part of the process. It doesn’t look half bad either!

One Fun Lamp

No, your eyes aren’t seeing things! Just look a little closer and you’ll notice that the lamps of the Minimo series aren’t actually defying gravity; instead, each shade is supported by an acrylic base that faintly mimics the silhouette of familiar classic forms. Clear bases and interchangeable shades mean endless customization to fit both classic and contemporary settings.

Equilibrium in a Light

Gotta love Iva Dinulovic’s bare-bones design: the Antithesis lamp. With all elements exposed, the aim of this design was to achieve equilibrium within a moving structure- to do this, the unique floor lamp uses a counterweight to balance between different positions. The light can change tilting positions up to 45 degrees, can be rotated 360 degrees, and also stand in a completely upright position.

ICFF: Molo Design - Hobo Lantern

Molo launched the Hobo Lantern this year - a bag/light or "portable luminary inspired by urban nightlife". The bag can be plugged in, or can be powered with batteries. It is lit with an energy-efficient LED light source that glows through a delicate pattern of translucent fibers.

Pinha Lamp Shay Alkalay & Yael Mer

The Pinha Lamp by Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer is a nice idea for a flexible lamp – the shade is made up of a piece of cork that allows you to customize the lampshade with your own textile or piece of printed paper. Lovely and customizable! The lamp is a finalist in the Bright Ideas Lighting Competition sponsored by Inhabitat and Philips. The Bright Ideas competition challenged designers around the world to come up with inspired design solutions to shine a light on eco-friendly LED technology. Over 450 designers submitted entries to this competition and 40 finalists were short-listed to participate in online voting until June 15th.

Lighting with Infinite Combinations

The beauty of the Guss modular lighting system by designer Santiago Sevillano is that it has what seems like an infinite number of possible configurations. Though the curvilinear components are identical, they can be separated, recombined, and mixed and matched to create dramatic pendants, wall lamps, table lamps, or floor lamps that are not only unique but 80% less energy consuming than standard incandescent lights.

Dangle Lamp

This friendly looking lamp by Enrico Salis supports a single shelf for books and other objects while it’s adjustable upper arm holds a paper chandelier- almost as if it’s presenting an offering of light to the user. The adjustable upper arm  can be set in two positions while the electrical wire remains hidden within the simple but rigid supporting structure.  This straightforward design makes a great lighting solution bedside or near a comfy chair; perfect for late night reading.

Techno-Organic Lighting

This new collection of suspended LED lamps by Integral Studio Vinaccia utilize an overlay of hard wooden slats to create volume and soft familiar shapes. A cloud of wood blades form the Cumulus lamp as it seemingly floats while spreading soft light and the Frame lamp’s wood slats hold an interchangeable central screen that casts elaborate shadows on the surrounding space. The entire collection is available in natural wood, or painted white or black.

Woven Light

Leave the screwdriver in the toolbox. The Disque pendant lamp by Dutch designer Marc van der Voorn achieves is modest look from two translucent bowl-shaped discs that are bound together with nothing more than a thin 65 meter string (DIY people!). Weaved beautifully between the discs, the string gives a soft touch of character to an otherwise reserved design. A little alien mothership-ish, but overall quite appealing.
