S – Chair Transformers by Beton

betonresttop1.jpg

Polish designers Beton have created the S – Chair Transformer, a polyethylene foam cover that transforms solid chairs into comfy armchairs.

betonrest4.jpg

A thin, rectangular sheet of polyethylene foam is laser cut to create the surface pattern and interlocking mechanism that holds the two ends together without any further fixings.

betonrest3.jpg

A thin rectangle of polyethylene foam is laser-cut in such a way, that you can create a tube out of it without using glue or anything like that. Inside the tube you can place any chair (the uglier, the better) and then you can sit on it. The chair is transformed into a comfortable, waterproof armchair… At first the standing tube might be misleading, and it is the easiest way of creating something out of almost nothing.

Opera by Axel Enthoven

Belgian architect Axel Enthoven has designed a mobile holiday home that resembles the Sydney Opera House.

Called Opera, the canvas holiday home unfolds from a trailer and includes two beds, a toilet, hot and cold water, LED lighting and a mobile hob.

It is handmade and fitted out with materials including hardwood, stainless steel and leather.

The design will be on show at the Design at Work trade fair in Kortrijk, Belgium, next month.

Latis collection by Omvivo

Thomas Coward of Omvivo has designed a collection of bathroom furniture combining timber, stone and solid surface.

The range features a deep rectangular bathtub, undercut at one end.

A wooden shelving unit nests in this space to complete the brick-shaped volume.

Stone basins rest on oak tables with either wooden or stone lower shelves.

The Green Share A Cab

In Utopia you can actually find cabs that are willing to take you to your destination. In that same fantasy land, cabs drivers and passengers actually believe in carpooling! For such fantasy situations is the Carpool LED Top Light. This sprightly indicator harnesses the wind energy via the embedded fan to power the indicating lights. Sadly we don’t live in Utopia and we can never find a cab, let alone share one!

Pitch stool by Nicolai Czumaj-Bront
words by the designer

American industrial designer, Nicolai Czumaj-Bront has recently launched a new piece called pitch stool. A stool/side table made from reclaimed wood which stool explores a balance and celebration of precision and imperfection. Combining a machining process with reclaimed wood. As the weathered and worn wood is shaped, the beauty and character from the variation in color, material arrangement, and signs of wear are exposed to produce a highly precise yet imperfect design. While the overall form is consistent each piece is individual.

nendo: cord chair for maruni

the cord chair is a result of a collaboration between nendo and maruni.
made from hard maple and steel, the aim was to show off the flawlessness of the wood material,
instead of exposing the chair's underlying metal frame. to achieve this they decided to
hollow out each piece of wood to clad the steel structure.

nendo's design is derived from their exploration of the relationship between materials like
metal wiring within an electrical cord and the rubber that encases it. each of the chair's parts
is carved from wood and left in its most natural state. the 'lightness' of the chair is expressed
through its thin structure. the legs are only 15 mm in diameter with the main steel frame 9 mm.
since each part is only 3 mm wide, the chair can only be constructed by hand.

joshua kirsch: concentricity interactive light series

concentricity is an interactive light sculpture series by joshua kirsch. consisting of three

individual pieces - concentricity 96, 80, 16 - each one presents an illuminated white handle
in which a viewer is invited to move in any desired direction. reed switches located within
the sculpture's circuitry sense the movements of a magnet that is contained in each of the
sculpture's handles, translating this information into the form of LED light.

concentricity 96 utilizes 96 white LEDs whose light floods through the sculpture's
honeycomb-like aluminum frame, casting a range of shapes and patterns on the wall.

Studio profile: Kompott

Polish Design Season: here’s an overview of work by one of Polish design studios, Kompott.

Above: Kompott boxes. Boxes Working on a borderline of the Old and the New, we were tempted to reinterpret the most elementary object for storing – a wooden box. Basing on its construction – using the slots in between the planks – we have developed a simple storage system based on the traditional way of connecting wood.
