Going Back to Sundials

The Umbra is an ultra cool clock concept that works on the principles of the sundial. Two strips of concealed LEDs create the illusion of the hour and minute hands. Although a bit bulky, I love the fact that you can tape the clock vertical or horizontal, thanks to the gecko tape in the rear.

ben broyde: orlogin

'orlogin' by ben broyde

israeli designer ben broyde has created the clock series entitled 'orlogin'. his project functions as a realized research project
regarding the use of two dimensional sketches in design and the way in which an artist relates to this planning medium.
due to the layering of the sketch, there is an ease present to the production of a three dimensional product. the construction process
of 'orlogin' was accomplished as if the three dimensional object were quickly sketched by hand, and they are completed without
any post-construction finishing.

broyde's process begins with base shapes formed from wood-- a cylinder, rafter and cube. the shapes are then coated
with a layer of paint: the designer must cut away at the polished exterior in order to expose the wood underneath.
the glue holding these shapes together combines with the pigments, dripping lazily from the jointed areas.
the result is a series of grandfather clocks roughly pieced together in a contemporary interpretation of an iconic household timepiece.

'orlogin', was featured during jerusalem design week, organized by the jerusalem center for design.

Number Pad Watch Is Surprisingly Not a Calculator

watches - Number Pad Watch Is Surprisingly Not a Calculator

The only thing keypads are used for these days are quick calculations, so you'd expect this Keypad watch to double as a tiny calculator. But it doesn't. While the buttons work, all it does is tell time and look awesomely retro.
The $90 watch lacks a display, but telling time isn't as obfuscated as with other design-minded timepieces. The numerical buttons simply light up in sequence when pressed. So if you see 1-2-3-4, then it's 12:34—pretty damn simple.
Pressing the # button will instead indicate the current date, and as far as I'm concerned, the clever packaging which incorporates the keypad into a full keyboard graphic is worth the price of admission alone. [Watchismo via BoingBoing]

Fiona Kruger – Memento Mori

Ooh, I dig this Memento Mori Watch by Fiona Kruger. The level of detail is just gorgeous.
Memento Mori reinterprets the theme of mortality in horlogery, drawing inspiration from the 17th century skull watch of Mary Queen of Scotts, Mexican Dia de Los Muertos decoration and beautifully decorated skeleton movements found in today’s luxury watches.
The pieces of the skeletonised dial are layered to make up the form of a skull, echoing the layers which make up a mechanical watch movement. Each piece is decorated and assembled by hand resulting in a unique timepiece rich in tradition, know how and symbolism.

Sun & Solar Powered Clock

Light Gap is a concept clock with solars cells on its backside. You stick it on a window so sunlight can illuminate the slit on the face to form the hour hand. As day moves into night, batteries kick in to illuminate a row of LEDs in the slit, thanks to the aforementioned solar cells.
Light Gap is a Red Dot Concept Design 2010 winning entry.

Paper Wall Clock

Amarillo2 is a handcrafted cardboard and paper wall clock, built beautifully with love and passion. The clock’s colorful hands break up the concentric rings and angles that look almost hypnotic. Don’t stare too hard. I also love the pizza-box packaging!

What Big Hands You Have!

Love it, love it, love it! The Zoomin Watch is such a brilliant concept, not only is the idea of magnifying nubs on the hands a superb idea, but also the design execution is sleek and sophisticated. Not for a single moment does it look like a watch intended for the Silver Generation…if anything it looks like cool wrist gear that will appeal to all generations. Designers, take a bow!

Time is Squishy

Someone said that even a broken watch shows the correct time twice a day. With that “glass half full” mentality in mind, check out the Vague Clock. It’s not broken or anything. In fact it runs with GPS precision and can never be wrong. What’s unique is the dial and supporting intention. It’s meant to signify that time, although precious, is often the cause of stress. The pressure to keep up with our deadlines is abstracted and replaced with a playful distraction. To be able to read the time, you have to touch its squishy surface.

What a Face!

The Orbo is a series of watches with unusual dials. The series includes the Temp, the Date and the Stop, all of which have orbiting digital displays mounted ontop of the regular analogue dial. The secondary displays feature temperature or date depending upon the model. However the Stop is a Chronograph and features a cluster of secondary displays. Overall the effect is quite cute enough to warrant production.

Solaris Watch

A concept watch for Tokyoflash, the Solaris features solar cells as an integral part of the design. It definitely has that almost “too hard to use” quality found on most Tokyoflash watches but theres something about this design I find extremely appealing. Perhaps because it looks like a device a sci-fi hero would use to jump through time.

Let’s have a glance at a watch that employs the now-famous and awesome E-Ink technology made famous by, if I’m not mistaken, the Amazon Kindle eReader. This watch is a double-down in that it uses E-ink to for both form and function, allowing the bold and radical lines to make the watch beautiful and very readily visible. This watch is made of glossy black metal, embellished with small chrome parts.
The display is adjusted with two buttons along the left side of the watch. The bottom display is the lighter gray of the background being used as the numbers display with the black merging with the black of the watch metal. Blasting off into hard bold, bold space with a metal stone.

ZIIIRO is a Go

There once was a watch name ZERO and after receiving a lot attention from Yanko's original feature, designer Robert Dabi decided to make it a reality as the ZIIIRO. Those of you who love his unique approach to telling time need to order one now. He’s even designed a metal mesh version if the original cuff isn’t your style. I want one, I want one bad. We’re incredibly proud of Robert’s success. Get it!
