the GXR by ricoh is a new camera system that consists of a body and camera units.
small enough to always carry around with you, it has the ability to change lenses to match
the change in scene and mood around you. each camera contains a lens (focal lengths differ
between units), along with an image sensor and image processing engine optimized for that lens.
a slide mechanism was adopted for attaching and removing camera units quickly and securely,
making it a compact and versatile interchangeable camera system unit.
eliminating the lens mount which was present in interchangeable lens camera systems up
until now, means the back focal length can be freely defined for the GXR, enabling the unit
to use the most optically efficient lens designs. this gives it excellent potential for future expansion.
the result is a camera concept which achieves compact size without compromising image quality.
the lens and image sensor have been combined together into a single unit,
with a filter optimized for resolution of the specific lens, preventing color noise.
the single lens and image sensor structure also makes it difficult for dust to get in since
it is not necessary to expose the inside of the camera when changing lenses.
both body and camera units utilize a magnesium alloy exterior resulting in a strong light,
precision molded part. it is finished with a non-slip 'pear-skin' baked exterior to resist corrosion.
the guide rail is a defining characteristic of the GXR system.
it allows for a reliable slide mechanism with stainless steel strength and corrosion resistance.
