The Ornamo Design Award 2009 of 10 000 €, has been presented to the talented designer Marita Huurinainen for her latest project WAVE – bent clogs. The award was made public at The Ornamo Foundation’s seminar in the Helsinki Design Museum. This year the award winner was chosen by the distinguished Finnish textile artist, Ritva Puotila.

Marita Huurinainen’s extraordinary shoes use a technique mostly seen in Finnish furniture design. The sole is made of plywood and the heel is shaped naturally from the same piece. The coating can be made of different materials and shapes.

Huurinainen’s Wave-clogs can be used casually or formally. The warm spirit of wood can be sensed in the clogs and by using different kind of woods for the sole there are endless possibilities to vary the design. The colours are natural wood colours as there are no chemical dyes used on the sole. The shoes are made in Finland and the design rights are protected by the National board of patents and registration of Finland.

“Wave is a developable and functional insight that shows great promise. The processing of the materials and the production of the form are innovative. The design is courageous and pure. The shoes are produced by serial production and the manufacturing is environment friendly”, textile artist Ritva Puotila on her choice for the award.
